Manuela DaCosta was born in Terceira, Azores, and immigrated to the United States when she was 19 years, just before the Carnation Revolution of 1974.
In addition to writing the Hawk Island series, Manuela published her first book, Os Sonhos de Dona Dores, in the 90's. This book is written in Portuguese, in prose, and illustrates the conflicts between a young girl and her parents as immigrants of a new country.
Hawk Island offers a different approach with intense character building and deeply descriptive landscapes. It tells the story of the dynamic between islanders and strangers in this remote island.
It's a provocative story about how a group of women fight the patriarchy in a land that tends to be archaic and forgotten. Love, loss, cruelty, and courage... it's all found on Hawk Island.
